Following Italy’s capitulation in September 1943, the coastal regions, including the city of Split, were reintegrated into Croatian territory. After the Croatian postal service took over the city, post offices had plenty of Italian stamps, but no Croatian ones. Allegedly, the management of the post offices in Split then sent Italian original stamps to Zagreb so that they could be overprinted and used in postal service until the Croatian stamps arrived. The overprints were made, sent back to Split, but were never in use.
